CHOLERA

Understanding the Risks and Prevention

Cholera is a severe bacterial infection that causes acute diarrhoea and dehydration, often leading to life-threatening complications if left untreated. It is caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae and spreads through contaminated food, water, and poor sanitation. Cholera outbreaks are common in areas with inadequate access to clean water and proper hygiene. At FirstContact Pharmacy, we provide expert advice on cholera prevention, symptoms, and treatment, ensuring you stay protected, especially when travelling to high-risk regions.

How Does Cholera Spread?

Cholera is primarily transmitted through the ingestion of contaminated water or food. Common sources of infection include:
✅ Drinking unclean or untreated water
✅ Eating raw or undercooked seafood, especially shellfish
✅ Consuming food prepared by someone with poor hand hygiene
✅ Living in or visiting areas with poor sanitation and sewage treatment.

Once ingested, the bacteria produce toxins that cause the body to lose large amounts of fluids and electrolytes, leading to severe dehydration.

Symptoms of Cholera

  • Cholera symptoms typically appear within hours to five days after exposure. In mild cases, symptoms may be minimal, but severe cases can cause:
  • Profuse watery diarrhoea ("rice water" stools)
  • Severe dehydration and weakness
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Rapid heart rate and low blood pressure
  • Muscle cramps due to electrolyte loss
  • Sunken eyes and dry skin
  • Severe dehydration can quickly lead to shock, kidney failure, and death if not treated promptly.

What to Do If You Suspect Cholera?

Cholera requires urgent medical attention. If you or someone you know experiences severe diarrhoea and dehydration, seek immediate medical care. Early treatment with oral rehydration salts (ORS), fluids, and antibiotics can save lives.

At FirstContact Pharmacy, we provide expert advice and support to help you manage cholera risks effectively.
